1796 Draped Bust Dime. JR-5. Rarity-5. VF-35 (PCGS). Attractively original in a blend of pewter and olive-gray patina, this handsome piece also exhibits a few blushes of charcoal and deep rose toning on the reverse. Evenly struck and worn, plenty of bold to sharp striking detail remains to the major design elements. A lone adjustment mark on Libertys forehead is as made, several wispy marks in the center of the obverse also noted for accuracy. JR-5 vies with JR-3 as the second rarest die marriage of the first year 1796 Draped Bust dime, and this is an appealing Choice VF that is sure to catch the eye of advanced early die enthusiasts. From the E. Horatio Morgan Collection. Earlier from our (Stacks) session of Auction 87, July-August 1987, lot 554. Clipped lot tag included.
