1873 Two-Cent Piece. Close 3. Proof-65 BN (PCGS). CAC. OGH. This richly original Gem is boldly and evenly toned in antique copper-brown. Direct lighting calls forth subtle pale rose, apricot and powder blue undertones, as well as modest reflective tendencies in the fields. Fully struck throughout with a smooth and inviting appearance. Per numismatic tradition, the Close 3 is the original two-cent Proof of 1873, the mintage estimated at 600 pieces in most numismatic references but possibly on the order of 1,500 to 2,000 coins. As a Proof-only issue, this is one of the more eagerly sought two-cent pieces in todays market. Fortunately enough examples survive in lower grades to satisfy demand from less discerning collectors. Advanced numismatists, however, will need to compete vigorously to secure one of the few Gems certified by PCGS and NGC, as here. From the Macon Collection.
