1797 Liberty Cap Half Cent. C-1. Rarity-2. 1 Above 1--Overstruck on a Cut-Down Talbot, Allum & Lee Cent--AU-55 BN (NGC). An uncommonly well preserved example of this conditionally challenging early half cent design type. Warm olive-brown patina blankets both sides, the surfaces overall smooth in hand with no mentionable handling marks. The strike is well centered with full, evenly denticulated borders around both the obverse and reverse. All design elements are boldly to sharply rendered, the detail to Libertys hair curls particularly sharp and impressive. A thin flan flaw in the lower left obverse field is as made, as is a more prominent lamination in the upper right field on the same side. As the most plentiful die marriage of the 1797-dated half cent issue, and the one that corresponds to the popular 1 Above 1 Guide Book variety, Cohen-1 enjoys strong demand in all grades. Manley Die State 4.0, "scarce."
