1788 New Jersey Copper. Maris 50-f, W-5475. Rarity-3. Head Left. VF-25 (PCGS). Generally well centered in strike, although the upper left obverse is devoid of border denticulation, lower left reverse border also soft. Typical die bulge in the right obverse field affects the detail at the back of the horses head, shallow flan flaws in and around the centers on both sides also resulting in areas of softness. Most major design elements are bold, nonetheless, and the date is sharp. Richly toned in a blend of charcoal-copper and rose-brown, the obverse is microgranular, reverse with faint pin scratches in the lower left field that are easily overlooked in hand. As the most readily obtainable of the three Head Left varieties, Maris 50-f enjoys added demand from type collectors and enthusiasts of major (read: Guide Book) varieties
