New York. 9th Regiment New York State Militia. F. Mangold. 10 Cents. Schenkman NY-9-10B (NY-D10B). Rarity-6. Brass. Plain Edge. 19 mm. AU-55 (NGC). Bold sandy-brass patina exhibits intermingled swirls of copper-rose and olive-gold. The central reverse is soft and nearly devoid of detail, the wear a bit heavier in that area due to being opposite the incuse denomination 10 on the obverse. Otherwise we note sharp definition for this minimally circulated survivor. A few faint carbon spots on the obverse are noted solely for accuracy. According to the New York State Military Museum, this regiment was informally known as Hawkins Zouaves, New York Zouaves, Little Zouaves, and Zoo-Zoos. No information comes to hand about their sutler, Mangold.
