1826 Erie Canal Completion. White Metal. 45 mm. HK-1. Rarity-6. MS-61 (NGC). Superior quality for a white impression of this rare early medal type, both sides exhibit bright silver gray surfaces. Direct lighting calls forth flashes of prooflike reflectivity from the protected areas around the design elements, which are smartly impressed with razor sharp to full detail. Wispy hairlines and a couple of faint scratches in the fields explain the Brilliant Uncirculated grade from NGC, but given that most survivors of HK-1 are worn to one degree or another, and many are also impaired due to environmental damage, this is a highly significant condition rarity that is worthy of the strongest bids. The companion piece to the elusive silver (HK-1000) and exceedingly rare gold (HK-1001) examples of this type that we are also offering in this sale, all from the same consignor. From the Richard Jewell Collection.
