1865 Cornelius Vanderbilt National Gratitude medal. Bronze. 76 mm. By Salathiel Ellis. Julian PE-36. SP-63 (PCGS). A particularly handsome example of this large medal honoring this leading American businessman of the 19th century who wisely devoted his attentions to railroads as the rail system began to blossom, and shipping at a time that would prove handsomely profitable as the California Gold Rush developed. Light caramel brown surfaces with geometric flecks of lighter tan throughout as often seen on this finish. A few scattered marks, but glossy and with superb eye appeal.
