1885 Uniface Grover Cleveland First Term Presidential Medal. Bronzed Copper. 76.4 mm. By Charles E. Barber. Julian PR-23 var. Mint State. Exactly as the standard mint issue, but with the extreme outer rim on the obverse milled down slightly, and the reverse entirely blank - except for a series of concentric incised lines ending at a central depression. This item, which we (Stacks) sold in our January 2010 Americana sale for in excess of $1700, was from the collection of Charles E. Barber, Chief Engraver of the United States Mint (and designer of this piece), and is thought to be an obverse die trial of the standard Mint Medal. Attractive and impressive, this unique piece shows only some very slight contact marks on its semi-reflective surfaces. Original auction tag included. From the Richard Jewell Collection. Earlier from our (Stacks) sale of the Collection of Charles E. Barber, Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, January 2010, lot 4854.
