British North America. George II (1727-1760). The Quaker, Duffield, or Treaty of Easton Medal, 1757. Silver, Original struck over a Spanish-American 8 Reales. 44mm. 25.2 gms. Laureate and cuirassed George II bust left, rev. Colonist and Native American seated around a council fire passing a peace pipe. Betts 401, Jamieson fig.8, Julius IP.49, Tancred p.46. This medal is believed to be the first Native American Award medal executed in America. The Philadelphia-based Friendly Association for Regaining and Preserving Peace with the Indians by Pacific Means commissioned Edward Duffield to prepare dies for award medals to be presented to Native Americans then engaged in discussions that would lead, a year later, to the signing of the Treaty at Easton, Pennsylvania. Duffield, a Philadelphia watchmaker, had earlier made the Kittanning medal (Betts 400) -- for a French and Indian War event the polar opposite of his new commission. After he prepared the dies, the Society supplied Spanish-American 8 Reales to serve as planchets. The medals were then struck by Society member Joseph Richardson. Duffields dies remained with the Society until the 1810s when they were sent to the US Mint. Extremely rare with just 13 original medals known. NGC Fine Details - damaged. Holed at edge for suspension, some scratches in field. Rich old slate gray tone.
