POLAND. Danzig. Medallic 4 Ducats, ND (ca. 1648). Danzig Mint, by: Johann Hohn. Johann Casimir. EXTREMELY FINE.16.21 gms. Fr-29; KM-A59; cf.Dutkowski/Suchanek-337; cf.HCz-2341. Laureate and draped youthful bust right, script engravers initials below bust, legend around "IOAN.CASIMIR9 D.G.POL.&SUEC.REX" (John Casimir, Grace of God King of Poland and Sweden); Reverse: View of the city, arms of Danzig in foreground, radiant Jehovah in Hebrew above all within solid boarder, legend around "REGIA CIVITAS GEDANENS: FIERI FEC." (to be made the King of the city of Danzig). A strongVERY /strongstrongRARE/strong multiple ducat that seldom appears in todays market. Several solder marks around the circumference from being mounted in the bezel with light to moderate signs of handling consistent with being worn, though nothing overly distracting. Despite its shortcomings an interesting and highly sought after type sure to add depth to the next collection it enters. The suggested circa date to 1648 which would have been before he was elected King by the Commonwealth parliament 17 January 1649 is due to the fact of the missing titles in the legend of Magnus Dux Lithuaniae (M.D.L) (Grand Duke of Lithuania), Russie (Russ) (Ruthenia) and Prussiae (Pruss) (Prussia) which seem to have been added to his coins by 1649. Also because of the presence of the title of King of Sweden this had to have been struck in 1660 or prior as he was the Titular King of Sweden from 1648-1660.Property from a Private New York Collection.Acquired by the grandfather of the present owner in Poland, circa 1930.
