VESPASIAN, A.D. 69-79. AV Aureus (6.92 gms), Rome Mint, A.D. 76. NGC VF.RIC-840; Calico-622a. Obverse: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, laureate head right; Reverse: COS VII, cow standing right. A charming gold issue from Vespasian, 10th of the famous "12 Caesars." The reverse of this type is thought to allude to the peace achieved by Vespasian following his efforts in the Jewish War, whereby a famous Greek statue of a cow was placed in a temple newly dedicated to peace.
