SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-406 B.C. AR Tetradrachm (17.32 gms), ca. 415-406 B.C. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5. Fine Style.Tudeer-47 (V15/R29); SNG ANS-274 (same dies); Kraay & Hirmer 107 (same dies); HGC-2, 1344. Obverse die signed by Euth-, reverse die signed by Phrygillos. Obverse: Nike, holding reins, driving quadriga right; above, crowning Nike flying left; in exergue, Skylla swimming right, holding trident over shoulder; to left, dolphin leaping out of the sea; to right, EYΘ and fish swimming right; Reverse: ΣYPAKOΣION, head of Arethusa left, wearing grain wreath; four dolphins around; below neck, [ΦPYΓIΛΛ/OΣ] in two lines. Outside of the signature on the reverse (known from the die), this piece offers great centering with pleasing, fine style detail. A lightly toned example, this specimen exhibits some hints of cobalt around the devices--mostly on the reverse--further accentuating its charm. A resounding and exceptional piece of signed ancient art, with just some light, even wear on the high points.Ex: Stacks (1/2010) Lot # 60.
