Circa 1854 Metropolitan Mechanics Institute medal. Musante GW-192, Baker-342, Julian AM-44. Silver. SP-64 (PCGS).38.9 mm. 524.6 grains. Without award inscription on the reverse, unlike the few other silver examples we are aware of. A beautiful medal with medium to deep gray silver accented by vivid blue and violet iridescence on the obverse and a blend of orange, gold, lilac and blue on the reverse. The high relief portrait has just a trace of rub on the highest hairlines, but the surfaces are very well preserved otherwise. Boldly prooflike through the fields. The first one we have seen in silver in many years.Ex Charles I. Bushnell, S.H. & H. Chapman, June 1882, lot 1413; William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897.
