1853 New York Crystal Palace medal by Alexander C. Morin and Anthony Paquet. Musante GW-191, Baker-361. Silver. SP-63 (PCGS).51.3 mm. 879.1 grains. Medium silver gray with attractive old-time cabinet toning on both sides. The obverse is smoky bluish gray near the rims and changes to lighter rose, violet and greenish gold through the central fields. The reverse is more intensely colorful, with vibrant blue-green, rose, violet and orange toning intermingled through the fields. A couple of small nicks are seen on the obverse and the fields are hairlined, but the medal presents fairly well overall as the glittering prooflike fields and satiny motifs give it a very lively appearance.
We had the remarkable fortune of handling two silver examples of this medal in 2014, the first formerly in the Captain Andrew Zabriskie cabinet, and the second from our offering of the 1853 Collection. There are no other appearances in our electronic archives going back about 15 years. The Garrett family had one, as did Gilbert Steinberg, though the latter was unplated and without further provenance. According to the June 1884 Cogan sale, there were 35 sets struck of this metal. This reads as 35 three-piece sets including silver, bronze and white metal. However, the rarity of this medal in all compositions is great enough to easily cast doubt on this. What might be more likely is that 35 were struck in all compositions, combined. This would align better with the frequency of appearances today. Naturally, silver impressions are the most desired and were likely made in the smallest number.Ex William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897.
