Circa 1847 Washington Temperance Society Award medal muling. Musante GW-175, Baker-356A. Copper, Bronzed. MS-62 (PCGS).41.6 mm. Deep mahogany bronze on the obverse with somewhat crusty slate patina that is possibly related to a problem in the original bronzing. It may also be a slight oxidation, or a combination of both. The reverse is lighter reddish chestnut brown, faintly mottled and glossy. A very rare muling, struck after the copper and white metal House of Temperance medals above, in close time period to the Mechanics Literary Association muling above, and before the other medals from this die in this sale. The first example we recall seeing.Ex Charles I. Bushnell, S.H. and H. Chapman, June 1882, lot 1416; William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897.
