Circa 1847 House of Temperance medal. Musante GW-174, Baker-329B. White Metal. MS-63 (PCGS).41.6 mm. Brilliant surfaces with satiny surfaces and some prooflike character in the obverse fields. Die finishing lines are prominent on this piece, likely the second struck of the eight examples from this obverse die offered here. The reverse is a bit brighter, with sharp reflectivity in the small field area left of the mother’s portrait. Satiny and lustrous otherwise. A small rough patch in the field over the table is from some softness in the strike that did not allow for complete definition due to the opposing high relief of Washington’s portrait. Quite handsome and probably the nicest one we have seen. Acquired in the Bushnell sale as part of a set of three.Ex Charles I. Bushnell, S.H. and H. Chapman, June 1882, lot 1415 (part); William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897.
