Circa 1847 House of Temperance medal. Musante GW-174, Baker-329. Copper. MS-63 BN (PCGS).41.6 mm. Faded golden tan in the reflective obverse fields and a bit deeper brown on the motifs which are flecked with slate toning. The reverse is deeper chocolate brown with some light olive in the small prooflike field area. Heavy die finishing lines are the strongest seen on all the Baker Collection medals struck from this die. This detail and evidence of how these lines change illustrate that this was the first struck among the eight different medals offered here. As noted above, it was followed by the Mechanics Literary Association and Award Medal mules, and all others were from a later state after the die was aggressively polished. The very few other examples from this die we have handled follow this same pattern. As such, this is clearly and significantly the “original” medal of the series, though it was bought by Baker as one of a three-piece set in the Bushnell sale.Ex Charles I. Bushnell, S.H. and H. Chapman, June 1882, lot 1415 (part); William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897.
