Circa 1847 Washington Temperance Society Declaration medal. Musante GW-172, Baker-328D. White Metal. MS-63 (PCGS).41.6 mm. Brilliant light pewter gray with strong reflectivity in the fields. Slight handling is noted, with a couple of tiny rim nicks and a few light surface scuffs. Quite rare, we do have a single example in this composition in our auction archives. As noted in the descriptions above, this is from a three-piece set of this type that Baker acquired intact in the Bushnell sale. This is the only one of the three to have the Baker number on the edge in red, as seen on a large number of the medals in this collection. We have wondered what this meant, but it seems clear here that the variety numbers were added by staff at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania long ago, perhaps as identifiers for a selection of medals removed from the Baker cabinet and on display at some point.Ex Charles I. Bushnell, S.H. and H. Chapman, June 1882, lot 1414 (part); William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897.
