Circa 1789 Washington Inaugural Button. Dotted Script GW, LONG LIVE THE PRESIDENT. Baker-1001, var., Cobb-10, DeWitt GW 1789-2. Brass. AU-50 (PCGS).35.3 mm. The shank is intact, though squashed nearly flat. Smooth light olive surfaces with just a trace of light debris clinging to the tighter recesses. A very even appearance with just a few tiny edge nicks and other minor marks, but nothing that is the least bit distracting. Strong definition and though clearly worn, not to a degree that has overly flattened or merged any of the design features. A classic type with excellent eye appeal and a fine provenance.Ex Charles I. Bushnell, S.H. and H. Chapman, June 1882, lot 1536; William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897. This may also be ex Finotti (W.E. Woodward, November 1862), which included an inaugural button purchased by Bushnell. The Bushnell Collection had two specimens, and the Finotti sale description leaves it uncertain as to which type was included therein. The Bushnell sale description leaves no question as to the type, however, so we know that this is the one William S. Baker bought in that June 1882 sale
