1863 Round 25 Cents. BG-820. Rarity-5. Liberty Head--Overstruck on an 1860/50 Round 25 Cents, BG-819--MS-61 (NGC).Lustrous semi-reflective, golden-honey surfaces on both sides. Ample remnants of the undertype are evident, the obverse of BG-820 overstruck on the reverse of BG-819, the date from the latter discernible along Libertys profile when the obverse is observed with the aid of a loupe. A most unusual offering, and the only overstruck California Small Denomination gold coin that we can ever recall handling. Both types are attributed to Robert B. Gray, who may have repurposed a poorly struck BG-819 as a planchet for a BG-820 striking. From Heritages FUN Signature Auction of January 2018, lot 6693.
