1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 33.17-gg.2, W-3635. Rarity-5. Draped Bust Left, ETLIR—Double Struck—Fine-12 (PCGS).112.9 grains. A fantastic error coin, the first strike on-center, the second strike about 50% off-center, approximately toward the 6 o’clock position of the obverse. Chiefly light olive-tan and microscopically granular everywhere, with some darker brown patina in the obverse fields. The reverse is amazingly double dated, the duplicate 1787 date from the secondary strike at the dead center of the reverse. A superb example of the double strike error type, a coin that brought an incredible $750 at its first known auction appearance in the 1975 EAC Sale over 40 years ago! From the Robert M. Martin Collection. Ex the 1975 EAC Convention Sale, Pine Tree Auctions, February 15, 1975, lot 358.
