1888 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. JD-1, the only known dies. Rarity-4-. Proof-64 Cameo (NGC).This captivating Choice Proof combines satin to softly frosted devices with deeply mirrored fields in true cameo fashion. Bathed in vivid medium gold patina, both sides are fully struck and nearly smooth enough to warrant consideration at the Gem grade level. The Proof 1888 has a generous mintage for the type of 291 coins, delivered to the medal clerk in the following installments: 56 coins during the first quarter of the year, 33 coins in May, two coins in June, and the remaining 200 coins on July 19. With 110 to 130 specimens believed extant in all grades (per John W. Dannreuther, 2018), the 1888 barely edges out the 1887 and 1889 to rank as the most readily obtainable Proof three-dollar gold piece in todays market. As with all classic U.S. Mint Proof gold coins, of course, the 1888 three is rare in an absolute sense. This is a beautiful Cameo specimen that would serve as a highlight in any cabinet.
