GERMANY. 5 Mark, 1930-A. Berlin Mint. NGC SPECIMEN-66.KM-68; J-343. Graf Zeppelin Commemorative issue. Produced in refined presentation quality, this enigmatic coin is similar in some regards to the matte-finished Proofs that appear on the market from time to time, and in fact, close inspection determines that both issues share at least the same reverse die; markers include a small raised pimple in the die to the left of the R in REICHMARK as well as a thin pair of die lines that extend from the rim down to the T in DEUTSCHES. Unlike the matte Proofs however, the surface texture is best described as satin-like on this piece, with fine granulation instead of coarse. The end result is more luster than the matte issues that tend to be flat in appearance. In addition to its eye-catching finish, the quality of this coin approaches pristine as well, with almost no signs of handling over the virtually tone-free surfaces and detail that far exceeds the crispness seen on the circulating issues. This being the first of its type we have seen or even heard of, its fair to consider it EXTREME RARITY, and potentially a trial finish that was aborted. Whatever the case, its existence will surely result in celebration among fans of the 20th century German commemorative series (including Zeppelin enthusiasts as well!) for the right to own a coin that is potentially without duplication.
