AGRIPPINA SENIOR (MOTHER OF CALIGULA, DIED A.D. 33). AE Sestertius (29.11 gms), Rome Mint, A.D. 37-41. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5.RIC-55 (Caligula). Commemorative issue struck under Caligula. Obverse: Draped bust right; Reverse: Ornamented carpentum drawn left by two mules. Despite some typical surface flaws, this rare piece yields a tremendous strike on both the obverse and reverse, with exceptional detail in Agrippinas hair and face, along with the highly decorated carpentum--a two wheeled carriage used in dedicatory processions. Rarely encountered without some form of tooling and/or smoothing.
