1916 Standing Liberty Quarter. MS-61 (NGC).A light golden satin tone predominates over sharply struck surfaces devoid of any significant detracting marks, all of which combine to form an excellent example of one of the twentieth centurys most famous and desired American design types. The Standing Liberty quarter design type was one of several issues of the era -- including the Lincoln cent, Buffalo nickel, Mercury dime, and Walking Liberty half dollar -- that were part of the renaissance in U.S. coinage design that took place in the first two decades of the 20th century. Virtually all of the designers of this new wave in U.S. coinage were students or associates of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. One of 52,000 examples struck in the first year of Hermon A. MacNeils Liberty Standing quarter design type, the lowest production run in the denomination after the 1913-S Barber quarter rarity. The inclusion of an Uncirculated 1916 Standing Liberty quarter in any collection has long proved to be a mark of considerable pride and distinction, the coin offered here an elegant specimen at the BU grade level.
