Wolfeborough, New Hampshire. $5 1882 Brown Back. Fr. 468. The Lake NB. Charter #1486. PMG Very Fine 30.The Lake National Bank of Wolfeboro was chartered in July of 1865 but this small New Hampshire bank managed to issue just $531,100 into circulation over the next 28 years. It liquidated in June of 1893. By 1910 just $2,310 in notes were outstanding on this large size only bank. Today just three notes are known on the bank. A single First Charter 1875 $5 is recorded as Very Good while another 1882 $5 Brown Back is recorded in Good condition. The presently offered $5 Brown Back is by far the finest known note on the bank in terms of condition as it is a solid Very Fine that displays modest signs of circulation. The penned signatures of the Cashier and Vice President are neatly penned and fully legible. All of the printed inks are well presented and sharply detailed. It is easy to surmise that this Wolfeboro bank was named for Lake Winnipesaukee which borders the edge of town. The town is a popular summer retreat destination and refers to itself as The Oldest Summer Resort in America. Additionally, Wolfeboro is the hometown of our own Q. David Bowers and is the location of one of our Stacks Bowers Galleries offices.
