Only 69,596 circulation strike double eagles were coined during the year at the Philadelphia Mint, equal to a face value of $1,391,920. Uncirculated examples are scarce by the standards of the type, Q. David Bowers in 2004 providing an estimate of just 1,000 to 1,500 pieces.
