1860-S Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. AU-58 (PCGS).Lustrous with a lively frosty finish from the dies, this nearly Uncirculated example also retains bold to sharp striking detail throughout the design. Bright and appealing, this coin is sure to please the discerning gold enthusiast. These are scarce to rare in all grades, the 1860-S quarter eagle produced to the extent of just 35,600 pieces with most long since lost to commercial use. Market appearances are few and far between with Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins: 1795-1933) recording only 26 offerings through auction from 1999 to 2008. This is a particularly attractive coin for both the issue and the assigned grade that is worthy of the strongest bids. From the Maurice Snow Collection. Acquired from Harry J. Forman, December 22, 1980.
