Federal Vignettes. Lot of (5) Items to Develop the Bison Vignette used on the 1901 $10 Legal Tenders. Average Fine.An important suite of five items that is very rarely seen. Production materials, essays, and related items to this famous type note are difficult to find. There were relatively few items in the 1990 NASCA-Smythe Glenn Jackson sales, now ancient history in the realm of federal proof and security printing history collecting. The Marcus Baldwin engraving of the bison, emPablo,/em is iconic in paper money collecting. He adapted this important engraving from the sketches drawn by Charles Knight (adapted likely from the photo included here). This fabulous group includes a photo card of the bison, but facing to the right (opposite to that on the vignettes and issued notes). There are four engraved essay vignettes for the central emPablo /emdesign. All are India paper on original cards. Most significant is a very early version with light details in the coat and missing some brush on the ground (India paper, affixed to thicker new paper). The three full die proofs are India paper proofs sunk upon cards and splendidly printed. Some lack minor details, but are nearly complete. One has tack holes around the card perimeter from engravers direct production use. One penciled on the verso with Baldwins name. An impressive and impossible to duplicate set from an old collection.
