Harvard University. "1866" Harvard Advocate Medal. Bronze. 38 mm. MS-65 BN (NGC).strongObv:/strong The Advocate symbol (a Pegasus tethered to a dictionary). strongRev:/strong Inscribed with the Advocates mottoes VERITAS NIHIL VERETUR (Truth fears nothing) and DULCE EST PERICULUM (Danger is sweet). The Harvard Advocate is the oldest continuously published college art and literary magazine in the United States, having been published almost continuously since its inception in 1866. These medals, perhaps issued to students involved in the production of the journal, are sometimes found with names and dates engraved on the reverse. Several obverse and reverse dies were used over the years, but an example using this pair of dies is inscribed M DE S. VERDE 08 leading your cataloger to suspect that the present example was issued much earlier in the century than the c.1940 date noted on the NGC holder. Another piece seen was dated 45 and was from a more modern set of dies. At any rate, a very appealing piece of Harvard University memorabilia.
