1831 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-117. Rarity-4. MS-64+ (PCGS).This lovely near-Gem exhibits iridescent powder blue and reddish-apricot peripheral highlights to otherwise dominant pewter gray patina. Sharply defined for the variety with a smooth, lustrous appearance. This is a scarce and conditionally challenging die marriage of the 1831 half dollar, the finest example listed in Herrman (Autumn 2018 revision) the PCGS MS-62 that appeared as lot 3162 in our (Bowers and Merenas) Frontenac Sale of November 1991. However, Overton lists an MS-65 in his Condition Census, acknowledged both in Herrman and our Frontenac Sale catalog. The present example may be the Overton MS-65, or it may be a newcomer, but in either case it easily qualifies as high Condition Census for the variety. Clearly a significant find for the advanced Bust half dollar variety collector.
