Friedberg 380 (W-40). 1865 $1 National Bank Note. Boston, Massachusetts. National Bank of Commerce. Charter #554. PMG Very Fine 25. Face Proof.Hessler-29. Printed on India paper. Imprint of American Bank Note Company. The design used on the first $1 issue in the National Currency series, bearing the Colby-Spinner signature combination. Carelessly cut from the original Proof sheet, with three of the four borders lost, and the upper portion of the next note down the sheet seen at the bottom. Some minor handling and folds, but maintaining a fairly clean appearance. Rare, interesting, and in the opinion of the cataloger, from an underappreciated series. A landmark offering, which will surely to be a highlight of any specialized collection of National Bank notes or proofs. Very conservatively graded as a designation at least five to ten points higher would seem appropriate. From our September, 14-16, 2011 Americana Sale, lot 4370; Q.
