Lot of (10) 1914 Red Seal $5-$100 Federal Reserve Notes. Minneapolis. PCGS Currency Graded. Composite Face and Back Presentation Proofs.Hessler-380I, 618I, 848I, 1044I & 1244I. District seal and markers, Treasury Seal and serial numbers all pasted to each. Originally all mounted together within a frame. According to the 1916 Annual Report of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, two framed sets of these five denominations and types were made for presentation. One produced for William J. Martin, confidential secretary for the Secretary of the Treasury sold for $5,800 in the Abner Kreisberg sale of October 25, 1978 as lot 1397. As stated there, the other is in the Yale University Coin Room, transferred in 2001 to the Yale University Art Gallery, where it resides today. Interestingly the Bureau record must have been inaccurate as a third set of the Richmond district notes were sold individually in Bowers and Merenas Connecticut Historical Society sale of April 8-9, 1983. That set is now broken. This Minneapolis group is the only to bear the Minneapolis district. We discount the ex Grinnell $5 to $10,000 set from this population as they were all of the blue seal configuration. The notes are graded as follows; Friedberg 840a (W-830-I-a) face in Very Choice New 64, back in New 62; Friedberg 900a (W-1550-I-a) face and back in Choice New 63; Friedberg 960a (W-2240-I-a) in Very Choice New 64, back in Choice New 63; Friedberg 1020a (W-2975-I-a) in Very Choice New 64 with the comments "Small Edge Tear at Top Left of Center," back in Choice New 63; Friedberg 1080a (W-3700-I-a) face in About New 50 with the comments "Severed, Backed," back in Choice New 63 with the comments "Small Internal Tear at Right." Truly a museum worthy set and a group that will be a centerpiece within any collection it enters. From Harry E. Jones, private purchase; Lyn Knights sale of the John Whitney Walter Collection, October 16, 2004, lot 123.
