1882-CC Liberty Head Double Eagle. AU-58 (NGC).This inviting example combines a softly frosted obverse with a noticeably prooflike reverse. Vivid deep orange and rose-gold patina throughout, both sides also offer sharp to full striking detail. Only 39,140 double eagles were struck at the Nevada coinage facility in 1882 ($782,800 face value). Most of these circulated extensively on the West Coast, although others were shipped overseas and found their way into European bank hoards. Q. David Bowers estimated a circulated population of 900 to 1,200 or more examples when he wrote his emGuide Book of Double Eagles/em back in 2004. His estimate has stood the test of time. Far finer than the typically encountered AU survivor, this premium quality coin is worthy of the strongest bids.
