1806 Capped Bust Right Half Eagle. BD-5. Rarity-7. Pointed 6, Stars 8x5. EF-45 (PCGS).A vividly toned and attractive example, both sides exhibit iridescent reddish-copper and steel-blue overtones to a base of deep orange-gold patina. The centers are softly defined due to a concentration of adjustment marks (as made) on the reverse over the eagles head, breast and the top of the shield. Most other design elements, however, are suitably bold for both the type and grade. The toning alone gives this coin superior eye appeal at the Choice EF level, and its desirability is even further enhanced due to the rarity of this die marriage in numismatic circles. Writing in 2006, John W. Dannreuther states that only 10 to 12 examples of the 1806 BD-5 half eagle are extant, this being the rarest variety of the issue after only BD-3 (six to 10 coins extant). A pretty coin whose offering in this sale represents a significant find for both type collectors and early gold variety specialists. BD Die State a/a.
