COLOMBIA. Uniface Cast Bronze Portrait Medal of J. Joaquin Acosta by David DAngers, 1830. EXTREMELY FINE.112 mms. Reinis-2. High relief bust of the Colombian soldier, explorer and historian facing right on a field blank except for his name written vertically to the left of his portrait, and "DAVID" (the sculptors signature) and the date 1830 below the bust. Part of a series of medals by David dAngers that included many of the young notables of his day. An old L. Richards foundry mark on the reverse largely obliterated by a newer mark of "Eck et Durand". The reverse of the plaque has a metal ball attached at the top, from which the medal could be hung from a vertical surface. At one time there were two of these suspension balls, but one has been removed (or perhaps never applied) leaving a neat round 3 mm hole where it would have been attached. Choice surfaces, expertly chased, with an antique bronze finish overall.
