LYDIA. Kroisos, 561-546 B.C. AV Heavy Series Stater (10.74 gms), Sardes Mint. NGC AU, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 5/5.Rosen-660; SNG Cop-454. Lion at left and bull at right facing and in battle. Reverse: Two connected incuse squares, one larger than the other. Placed on a virtually ovoid flan with high relief detail on the obverse design and strong surrounding luster that enlivens the surfaces. Overall superb quality for this "worlds first major circulating gold coinage", ideally suited for the collector that places historical significance at the forefront of their collecting objectives.
An iconic early type, attributed to Kroisos (or Croesus) who ruled the Kingdom of Lydia, which now exists as part of modern day Turkey. Through antiquity and beyond, his legacy centered around his significant wealth, with expressions such as "richer than Kroisos" still existing in the modern lexicon. Numismatically, he is best known for being the first to standardize gold coins for circulation, their composition being largely gold and silver, also known as electrum.
