Laconia, New Hampshire. $5 1902 Plain Back. Fr. 599. The Laconia NB. Charter #1645. PMG Very Fine 30.Here is a pleasing $5 we are offering on the Belknap County town of Laconia, home to the famous Weirs Beach Motorcycle Rally. This bright Very Fine offers exceptional clarity and sharp penned signatures of the banking officials. It is a scarcely offered large-size note on this Lakes Region charter.
In 1865 the busy commercial town of Laconia was up for grabs for anyone wanting to start a National Bank. The shareholders of the Belknap County Bank had discussed liquidating and turning the business over to a new bank, but squabbles erupted and nothing was done. In the meantime, John C. Moulton, a local man of business renown, gathered friends and acquaintances, filed for a federal charter, and on December 28, 1865, the Laconia National Bank became a reality, capitalized at $100,000, with the authorization to increase the capitalization up to $200,000 should the board of directors wish to do so. This was another of the many New Hampshire banks that prospered and continued issuing notes through the 1930s.
