1857-S Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-61 (PCGS).A premium quality, fully original BU example of this perennially popular type issue in the early Liberty Head double eagle series. Boldly to sharply struck with full, billowy, softly frosted luster. With warmer patina in a deep rose-gold shade, this coin has a markedly different appearance than that of most S.S. Central America coins, which account for the vast majority of Mint State 1857-S twenties in numismatic hands. This is obviously one of the rare Uncirculated examples that entered numismatic circles through repatriations of classic U.S. Mint gold coins from foreign bank hoards. Sure to please, and worthy of the strongest bids. From the Fairmont Collection.
