California, Pennsylvania. $10 1882 Brown Back. Fr. 485. The First NB. Charter #4622. PMG Choice Very Fine 35. Serial Number 1.State name nationals have always been popular. You have Oregon in Wisconsin, Wyoming in Pennsylvania, Virginia in Minnesota and Illinois, and the list goes on. So fortunately for Pennsylvania collectors, this newly discovered serial number one brown back could make a great new addition to an establish Keystone collection. The bad news is that some California state collectors might have a tough time passing this one up. California, PA had just one national bank. Sixteen large notes are listed in the census. Only one note is better than Fine. That is a VF 1902 $50 blue seal that sold for $4,465 in 2016. The present discovery comes to us from a Southwestern Pennsylvania consignor. In its 127 year life, it only made it about 40 miles away from its original home. As one would expect of any number one note, the circulation found here is really just storage folds. The paper is still crisp and bright, and the eye appeal is exactly what it should be.
