Friedberg 1221 (W-5008). 1882 $5000 Gold Certificate. PCGS Currency Gem New 65 PPQ. Proof. This incredible proof note is strikingly printed in dark inks on bright white India paper, now mounted on wide margin paper. James Madison is portrayed at left. At right is an ornate oval counter bearing 5000. Engraved signatures of Bruce and Gilfillan are stacked in the bottom right corner. At bottom center is an open space for the autographed signature of the assistant treasurer of the U.S. in New York City where issued examples would have been payable. Six zeros are perforated in each serial number block. No surviving issued examples are known for the type. Issued notes would have featured a brown Treasury Seal at center. This is one of just two proofs of the type we are aware of, with the other off the market for some time. An important piece and likely a collectors only opportunity to possess an example of the type. From Stacks sale of September 2010, lot 1123.
