Friedberg 1217 (W-4220). 1922 $500 Gold Certificate. PCGS Currency About New 53 PPQ.This $500 Gold Certificate displays one of the more powerful designs used on federal currency featuring a large portrait of President Lincoln at left. Large under-printed letters at top center spell out "GOLD" to instill confidence to those who received such notes. The ruby red small scalloped Treasury Seal complements the blue serial numbers and creates lovely contrast to the white paper. The luminous orange printed reverse design depicts our national bird in flight clutching our national colors. A large Roman numeral "D" at left states the denomination.
This is the finest PCGS graded 1922 $500 Gold Certificate. The paper displays only the slightest signs of handling. Ample margins are found along with traces of original plate embossing. The engraved design elements are darkly printed in sharp detail while the overprint inks remain boldly colored. The stirring back design is vivid orange-gold, free from the fading so often seen with this series. It is certainly a note worthy of an advanced federal type collection.
From Bowers and Merenas sale of November 1998, lot 40; Lyn Knights sale of June 2000, lot 542; Heritage Auctions sale of May 2005, lot 16752.
