Friedberg 1204 (W-3668). 1882 $100 Gold Certificate. PCGS Currency Extremely Fine 40.This dazzling Gold Certificate rarity presents a type and seal combination familiar to only the most advanced U.S. currency specialists. Most collectors and museum curators have never seen one, let alone owned one!

This 1882 $100 Gold Certificate displays a large red spiked Treasury Seal at center as seen on this catalog number only. Just five examples of this variety are known. Two are impounded in the collections of the Smithsonian and the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. The present note is the finest of the five surviving examples and had its first appearance in Barney Bluestones March 1945 offering of the Albert A. Grinnell Collection. Much could be said about Bluestones seven-sale offering of this collection. In brief, Part I crossed the block on November 35, 1944, and Part VII was sold on November 30, 1946. The only attendees for most of the sales were Bill Donlon, James Wade, Frederick C.C. Boyd, Richard Saffin, and Herman Crofoot, Donlon recalled. Donlon, who operated a theatre and an amusement park arcade, later became a professional currency dealer and was a close friend to Dave Bowers. The world of paper money changed dramatically with the publication Robert Friedbergs United States Paper Money book in 1953. In retrospect, most earlier activities are amazing to contemplate!

It is almost certain that the presently-offered note never saw real circulation but was folded into quarters and stashed away upon issue. The paper is bright and creamy white, displaying just four light vertical folds. Abundant margins are seen as is brilliant color in the gold overprints and red spiked Treasury Seal. The portrait of Missouri senator Thomas Hart Benton is sharply inked at left as is the bold orange-gold back print. This note was acquired by Mr. Anderson for $282,000 from a January 2014 auction. Given its combination of grade and rarity and the current market for elite level U.S. currency we would not be surprised to see that realization surpassed.

From Barney Bluestones sale of March 1945, lot 551; Stacks sale of March 1990, lot 1804; Currency Auctions of Americas sale of January 1999, lot 1590. Heritage sale of January 2014, Lot 17161.
