拍品描述 Friedberg 1166h (W-3648). 1870 $100 Gold Certificate. PCGS Currency Very Choice New 64. Proof. This is an incredibly rare federal proof printed on India paper and mounted on wide margin paper. The familiar portrait of Thomas Hart Benton is at left and is the same seen on the later $100 Gold Certificates of 1882 and 1922. An ornate die counter 100 is at right. Perforated serial numbers with six zeros are found at bottom left and top right. Spaces for the autographed signatures of the register of the Treasury and assistant treasurer of the U.S. are at the bottom right while a space reserved for the autographed signature of the assistant treasurer in New York is at bottom center. An example of this proof is plated on page 219 of the Hessler reference (Hessler 1223).
These Second Issue Gold Certificates were issued under an Act of March 3, 1863. The notes of this issue were uniface and had no engraved signatures. Two signatures would be signed at the right in Washington then the notes were transported to the assistant treasurers office in New York where he would add the final signature and then the notes were issued. Notes of this issue were produced in denominations ranging from $100 to $10,000. Nearly all were redeemed and no examples of the $100 denomination are known to survive. While not unique, this proof represents one of very few opportunities to secure a representation of the type. From Stacks sale of September 2010, lot 1117.
