拍品描述 Friedberg 345c (W-4173). 1880 $500 Silver Certificate of Deposit. PCGS Currency Very Fine 20.Offered is one of the great highlights of the Joel R. Anderson Collection and a true American numismatic treasure. This 1880 $500 Silver Certificate is one of just two examples of the catalog number in private hands and one of three collectible examples known of the type. The paper is evenly circulated and bright for the assigned grade. The printed inks are bold and great color is retained in the overprints. Full margins and sound edges are noted. A scattering of small pinholes do not diminish the overall aesthetic appeal of this monumental rarity.
These $500 notes were printed and issued in accordance with an Act of Congress passed February 28, 1878, and featured the portrait of Massachusetts senator Charles Sumner at right. Sumner is perhaps most notable for being the victim of a vicious caning at the hands of South Carolina representative Preston Brooks on the floor of the United States Senate on May 22, 1856. Brooks had taken offense to an anti-slavery speech titled "Crime Against Kansas" that Sumner had recently given. Sumner was so severely injured that he left the Senate to recuperate. He was reelected in November 1856 and in time was able to return to Washington.
The $500 Silver Certificates of 1880 feature a large brown Treasury Seal at top center with a brown 500 counter below. This catalog number has the engraved signatures of Bruce and Gilfillan stacked to the lower right of center. The black printed backs display SILVER in large, ornate letters at center.
Five examples of the Fr.345c are known to have escaped redemption. Of those five, three are permanently impounded in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the American Numismatic Association, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. The only other privately held Fr.345c is recorded in the census as Fine to Very Fine and has not been publicly offered since it appeared on a Dean Oakes price list in 1975. The present example has been off of the market since October 2005 when it was sold at auction for $483,000.
A single Fr.345d, Bruce-Wyman signed 1880 $500 Silver Certificate is privately held and is the third example of the type available to collectors. That note has been off of the market since selling for $776,250 in an October 2006 auction. With more than a decade since the last opportunity to secure this type arose, interested collectors should seize this opportunity as it could easily be a generation or more before another becomes available.

$500 Silver Certificates of Deposit, Series of 1880
Like earlier Series of 1878 $500s it seems that although these 1880 $500 Silver Certificates were printed in large quantities (16,000 for Fr.345c), most were used in import-export trade or in bank-to-bank transactions, with few ever entering general circulation. From James M.
