Friedberg 204 (W-3260). 1863 $100 Interest Bearing Note. PCGS Currency Very Fine 30.This is yet another tremendous note that we at Stacks Bowers Galleries are honored to present for the first time, thanks to the great depth of the extraordinary Joel R. Anderson Collection. Just two examples of this 1863 $100 Interest Bearing Note are known to survive with the other permanently housed in the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution. That leaves the presently offered note as the only issued example of this design type available to collectors. If you are a student of the history of collectible federal currency, the Albert A. Grinnell Collection sales are wonderful to contemplate. We all wish we (or our parents) were there. The Amon Carter, Jr. Collection, which included notes collected by Amon Senior is another incredible landmark. How we wish we were there! Now comes the Joel R. Anderson Collection, and you are here!

The vignette at lower left is titled Farmer and Mechanic and depicts two men seated with a shield between them. At the top center is a small vignette with an angular view of the U.S. Treasury Building. At lower right is the vignette In the Turret showing sailors with two cannons inside a period ironclad. Dual imprints of both the American Bank Note Company and the National Bank Note Company are seen at bottom center. A red spiked Treasury Seal is located at top right. The red printed serial number 8807 is at bottom left and top right. A red printed issue date of March 25, 1864 is located at bottom center with the printed signatures of Chittenden to the left and Spinner to the right. The green printed back displays large Roman numeral Cs at left and right with the Legal Tender clause and anti-counterfeiting language at center.
This is the plate note in the Friedberg and Hessler (The Comprehensive Catalog of U.S. Paper Money) references, as well as the Whitman Encyclopedia of U.S. Paper Money. It is recorded in the census as Very Fine to Extremely Fine. The design elements are all sharply printed in bold inks with vibrant green and red overprints. The note is well centered with ample margins nicely framing the design. The grading service makes mention of edge restorations which are masterfully executed and difficult to detect. This note sold for $299,000 in its first and only auction appearance in February 2005. Collector appetites for ultra rarities such as this are stronger than ever and we would not be surprised to see this note sell for well past our high estimate.

$100 Interest Bearing Notes, March 3, 1863, 5% Interest, 1 Year
These notes bore interest at the rate of 5% for one year, as determined by a date overprinted in red at the lower right face. 96,800 examples of the $100 were issued and issue dates of March 25, 1864 and April 14, 1864 are known, though others were most certainly used. These were sold at a discount to reflect the interest, and redeemed at face value upon maturity. These and related notes were mainly sold to banks and investors, and nearly all were redeemed.

From Heritage Auctions sale of February 2005, lot 16755.
