Banco Nacional. Catamarca. 56 Centavos Fuertes = 4 Chirolas. P-S667, BN-112-2. PMG Good 6 Net. Tape Repaired. A rare denomination and the only one from Catamarca in the collection. From 1879 to 1881, due to a coin shortage, the Banco Nacional issued three sets of provisional fractional banknotes in odd denominations with different exchange rates based on Bolivian coins. Bolivian coins had strict levels of silver in them and were the standard for many countries. As there was a need to issue them quickly they were printed locally by Kraft, Buenos Aires. These issues were also unusual in that they had the stamp of the branch office that issued them with the exception of the ones issued for Buenos Aires, which had no stamp. There were 18 issuing branches. All issued notes are very scarce to rare as they were redeemed for coins as soon as the coins became available. Since they were used extensively, the condition for most of the surviving notes is poor. The exchange rates and denominations were as follows:
-First series 1879: 9 Argentina Pesos = 1 Bolivian peso (9 centavos = 1 real)
o Denominations: 4½, 9, 18, 36 Centavos Fuertes
-Second series 1880: 14 Argentina Centavos = 1 Bolivian Chirola
o Denominations: 14, 28, 56 Centavos Fuertes; 5.6 Pesos Fuertes
-Third series 1881: 16 Argentina Centavos = 1 Bolivian Chirola
o Denominations: 16, 32, 64 Centavos Fuertes

The chirola was a small silver Bolivian coin that circulated primarily in the north.

The following notes are from the scarcest branches.
PMG Good 6 Net. Tape Repaired.
