Undated (1944) Inspiration - Aspiration Medal. Silver. 50 mm. 54.1 grams. By Richard Recchia. Alexander SOM-29.1--Engraved AVA 1960--About Uncirculated.,Edge marked FINE SILVER at 6 oclock. Looped for suspension. Lightly toned around the peripheries in reddish-gold, especially on the obverse, with a few minor marks and minimal high point rub. Satiny luster is virtually complete, the reverse a bit glossy with wispy hairlines that suggest light wiping. An additional inscription AVA 1960 has been added to the obverse above the Herm-type male bust. Medals of this type were initially issued during World War Two in the 50 mm silver format offered here, this precious metal chosen over bronze since the latter metal was in short supply due to wartime needs. (Even so, 57 bronze examples in 50 mm diameter seem to have been issued during the war.) According to David T. Alexander in the reference American Art Medals: 1909-1995, the production in this 50 mm silver format was 891 pieces. After the war additional silver and bronze examples were issued in a large 73 mm format.
The designer of this medal, Richard Recchia (1885-1983) was born in Quincy, Massachusetts and studied under Daniel Chester French and Bela Lyon Pratt.,,
