1797 (ca. 1805) Sansom Medal. Original. Bronze. 40.64 mm. By John Reich, for Joseph Sansom. Musante GW-58, Baker-71A. MS-63 BN (PCGS).,Handsome antique copper patina with glints of steel-olive tinting in the protected areas around the devices. The surfaces are solidly in the Choice category with no significant blemishes. This popular type is one of the earliest medals produced in the United States Mint. The original dies rusted early, as seen here, the surfaces on both sides exhibiting evidence of extensive rust pitting. The early deterioration of the dies in this manner explains the rarity of original strikings, the present example almost certainly one of the last bronze impressions before the dies were retired.,,
