Queen Liliuokalani (1838-1917). First queen and last monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii. Ascended throne on her brother s death in 1891, attempted to draft new Constitution which would have restored the power of the monarchy and the voting rights of the economically disenfranchised; overthrown by pro-American coup d etat and the landing of the U.S. Marines, abdicated 1895, composer of Aloha Oe and numerous other works.
